Inspired by Thomas Wilfred, one of the founders of light art in the 1920’s, Camiel Mulders and Noah Kasanardjo made an attempt to build their own light machine.

This experiment turned out into ‘Sculptor Lucis’. This is a standalone box, with motorised rotating plates, coloured glas and diverse mirrors, to defract the analogue light source in unexpected ways and project it onto the ceiling. The work goes against the ever-faster way of living, induced by systems such as social media and its algorithms. As a visitor, you are invited to sit or lie down and relax. What does staring into aurora borealis-type fragmented light sculptures on the ceiling do to you?

Camiel and Noah presented their work through an interactive installation format. They built a tent-like construction from cloth, and put pillows around the machine. The interaction was made possible by three different distance sensors, placed in boxes around the machine. Using your hands, you could determine the speeds of the different physical rotating plates, each sensor connected to its own plate, depending on the distance measured.

The experience was guided with a live synthesised ambient music performance by Citrus.
